Sunbelt Social Network Conference XXII

danah boyd and I presented a talk in the session "Computer Networks as Social Networks: Internet and Social Change." danah discussed the theory of structural holes in networks, while I demoed the BuddyGraph system and explained a bit about how it works, and why it applied to structural holes. Look at the animations below and at the powerpoint slides for more information.

    Visualizations shown at Sunbelt

Mike is an individual who saved most of his email for several years and donated his link file for example visualizations. His dataset contains 4,000 individuals. This visualization uses color to show how the individual knows Mike: yellow/brown indicates individuals known through school, blue are friends and family, red is work, and blue is bulk mail.

This animation shows Mike has some cross-over between his friends and school communciation, and to a lesser extent that some of his correspondence with coworkers includes communication with friends. When asked, Mike agreed that this was highly accurate: he does consider his coworkes as involved in his social life. While it is difficult to see any given individual's communication pattern, this animation shows broad trends in Mike's communication that would be missed at a more detailed examination.

These images show the spring-wire system running on names. While this animation can't be seen with the normal BuddyGraph Visualizer, it's interesting to watch how the system tries to group names together and are included here to show how names are layed out.
